Erik Rosdahl, the man who makes wine outside the mainstream
There are low-key winemakers, secretive winemakers… and then there’s Erik Rosdahl. A man who defies categorization, the creator of wines that are just as hard to pin down.
Originally from Sweden, Erik Rosdahl settled in the early 2010s in a setting that could not be more different from his homeland: the arid hills of Yecla, in the region of Murcia, in southeastern Spain. It was there, around the mysterious Monte Arabí, that he founded Laboratorio Rupestre, an artisanal project taken to a level of radicalism rarely seen.
The landscape seems almost surreal. Isolated vineyards, some of which are over a century old, are cultivated at altitudes between 800 and 1,000 meters on poor, stony, and highly calcareous soils. The land is scorched by the sun and subjected to extreme drought, yet it is cooled at night by the altitude and by dramatic temperature fluctuations. A harsh, untamed environment in which the vines must dig deep to find the resources necessary for their survival.
Erik works on a tiny scale, far removed from any conventional logic. He uses very few machines, almost no electricity, grapes that he insists on harvesting himself, and winemaking practices carried out with complete freedom. In particular, he uses very old terracotta jars before allowing his wines to age for a long time in used barrels. No formula, no window dressing, no technology designed to alter the vintage: just grapes, time, and an almost obsessive attention to every detail.
But to reduce his wines to their artisanal character or to the label of “natural wines” would be to completely miss the point. Erik Rosdahl seeks neither ease nor simple drinkability nor the immediate expression of fruit. His wines possess a much deeper dimension.
Wines for Contemplation
Produced in minuscule quantities and sought after by some of the world’s finest restaurants, Laboratorio Rupestre’s wines are almost more like works of art than commercial products. Tasting them is an experience unlike any other.
To discover Erik Rosdahl is to embrace the loss of one’s bearings. It is to meet a man who has chosen to live and make wine outside of convention, giving birth to deeply personal, soulful, and utterly unique wines.
These are wines that are not merely to be drunk. They are wines that linger in the memory.
This story began a few years ago, when Frédéric Henry met Erik Rosdahl during his travels in Spain, as well as in Burgundy, where the Swedish winemaker enjoys visiting regularly. Immediately impressed by the depth and uniqueness of his wines, Frédéric decided to purchase the few bottles that were still available. Since then, they’ve been resting peacefully at the back of our cellar… until our annual inventory last week, when we stumbled upon these true gems: Ruina 2017, Escombro 2018, and Carreres 2021. Three incredible vintages that have patiently waited for the perfect moment to reveal themselves.
A word of caution, though: the labels on Erik’s bottles are often already imperfect when they leave the winery—everything here is deeply artisanal—and ours have gathered a bit more dust over the years. Lovers of immaculate labels should look elsewhere… These bottles have lived, and that’s part of their story too 😉
