La Chaume des Lies

La Chaume des Lies

A couple in both vineyard and cellar, Margaux and Lothar have created their estate with 4 hands, and a rare vision, will and talent! On their 2 hectares, they produce wines that are authentic, full of energy and, in their image, irresistibly joyful.

It was during an impromptu aperitif in Pierre's cellar one spring evening. The sun was beginning to set over Saint Aubin. Glasses were filling up nicely. The team who had toiled all afternoon in the vineyard came back up with a sense of a job well done. It was here that we met Margaux and Lothar for the first time. She began working with Pierre Fenals in 2016. He joined them in 2018. These two youngsters are the pride of the old sage of Saint Aubin. For a few years, they learned a lot at his side. But they also brought him a lot. Their strength and energy, of course, but not only that. The trio regularly exchanged ideas and brainstormed. But then came the time to take flight...

In 2021, Margaux decided to settle down. She created the domaine La Chaume Des Lies. Her partner joined her a year later. However, they didn't let Pierre down, working long hours to develop their business while maintaining Maison en Belles Lies. Today, the couple are 100% dedicated to their business. They found the perfect location in the small village of Baubigny in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, where the altitude often allows them to live above the fog that hangs over the plain a few dozen meters below.

For months, they worked like slave labor to refurbish their winery, build a quality work tool and give themselves the means to launch into top-of-the-range vinification. At the same time, they acquired 2 hectares of vineyards not only next door, but also in Auxey-Duresses, Saint Aubin and Bouzeron.

Working alongside Pierre Fenals, Margaux and Lothar learned about biodynamic viticulture, and how to make wine without sulfur, as close as possible to the grape and with respect for the terroir. But it was also with fresh ideas and a clear vision of what they wanted to produce that they launched their domaine. For example, for the 2023 vintage, they have decided to switch to two years' ageing for all their Chardonnays. For a young domaine, this represents a real financial risk, but from a quality point of view, it's a more than pertinent choice!

A few weeks ago, we finally took the time to go back and taste the new 2023 vintage. No Chardonnay, then - we'll have to wait a few more months - but some magnificent Aligotés and perfectly positioned reds, with marvellous fruit and exemplary drinkability.

Today, we present 6 wines, 2 whites and 4 reds:

Aligotés 2023: sharp, mineral, precise, pebbly! You could drink aligotés like this every day.

Bouzeron 2023: aligotés located on the highest point of the plateau, on red clay. A more voluminous style that brings more length.

Coteaux Bourguignon 2023: new 12-acre parcel on Baubigny, 80% Gamay. Super-fresh, 11.5% alcohol, really pretty but tiny production...

Hautes Côtes de Beaune 2023: blend of 4 parcels, 100% whole harvest, little manipulation, infusion-type vinification but, behind, a very fine substance as vines date from 1942. A light, airy, fruity wine.

Bourgogne “les Châtaigniers” 2023: a new cuvée from a fine parcel in Saint Aubin. Vines 7 years old, first real harvest. 100% whole harvest, small berries, magnificent substance, good density. Superb pinot.

Auxey-Duresses 2023: small parcel of 43 ares, magnificent 80-year-old vines, great terroir, very expressive. Precise vinification, a wine with a beautiful, very vertical structure that promises a radiant future. Great potential, keep it!
